Air compressor unloaders cause the air compressor to stop pumping air to the reservoir when the air system reaches its maximum pressure setting and the governor pressurizes the unloader port. In the standard BA-921, the unloader opens a passageway that allows compressed air to flow back to the air inlet cavity in the head.

The closed room BA-921 air compressor is a little different. Compressed air flows through the unloader passage into a closed room in the head. The closed room is large enough to accept the compressed air without creating excessive air pressure in the head. The compressed air is evacuated from the closed room as the piston moves back toward the bottom of its stroke.

Once system air pressure has dropped below the governor's minimum pressure setting, the unloader port will no longer be pressurized. This allows the unloader to close and the compressor to begin sending air to the reservoir.
